Welcome to Zugg, Switzerland
Perched on the shores of a glacial lake in the heart of the Swiss Alps, Zugg is a town that has built its identity around two things: exceptional cheese fondue and artisan schnapps. With cobblestone streets, timber-framed chalets, and mountain views in every direction, Zugg offers the kind of Alpine charm that postcard photographers dream about — and the kind of food and drink that keeps visitors coming back year after year.
The Fondue Tradition
Zugg claims to be the fondue capital of Switzerland — a title contested by several other towns, but fiercely defended here. The local fondue recipe uses a proprietary blend of Gruyère, Emmental, and a third cheese produced only by the dairies in the surrounding Zugg Valley. The blend is a closely guarded secret passed between generations of cheesemakers.
Where to Eat Fondue
- Gasthaus Zum Goldenen Kessel — The oldest fondue restaurant in Zugg, operating since 1742. The house blend hasn't changed in over a century. Reservations essential in winter.
- Alpstübli — A rustic mountain hut above town, accessible by a short hike or the Zugg chairlift. The fondue is served in traditional caquelon pots over candle flames, with the lake shimmering below.
- Café du Lac — Lakeside dining with a lighter fondue preparation popular in summer, accompanied by local white wine and crusty bread baked in the wood-fired oven behind the bar.
The Schnapps Trail
Zugg's other claim to fame is its fruit schnapps — clear, potent spirits distilled from the cherries, plums, pears, and apples that grow in the orchards surrounding the lake. The Zugg Schnapps Trail links six family-run distilleries, each offering tastings and tours.
Featured Distilleries
- Brennerei Hofmann — Cherry schnapps (Kirsch) made from the dark Zugg cherry, a local variety with intense flavor
- Distillerie du Lac — Pear Williams and plum schnapps, with a tasting room overlooking the water
- Alpen Geist — Experimental small-batch spirits including a rosehip schnapps and a honey-infused variety aged in oak casks
